Venter is a marketing genius, which is partly why his work always gets so much attention, even though it's often more ostentatious than enlightening. In this case, it's a marvelous technical achievement, and you could look at it as an important milestone in synthetic biology, but it teaches us nothing, and it didn't require knowing anything about how DNA actually builds an organism that we didn't already know thirty years ago. Wake me when someone writes a novel synthetic genome from scratch, that will be real news.

The handfish are cool. Anglerfish are bizarre enough as it is, even more so when they have limbs.
